Mather Inn owners headed to jail on criminal contempt charges

ISHPEMING, MI— The owners of Ishpeming’s Mather Inn are headed to jail on contempt charges.

WLUC-TV reports Robin and George Baird interfered with the reconnection of electricity to Cognition Brewery, which was housed in the same building. It had been disconnected because of a squabble over a power bill.

An August 23, 2021 court order called for the restoration of power to the brewery by August 30. During a September 24 hearing the court found the Bairds did not comply with the order.

An October 11 order permitted Cognition owner Jay Clancey to work with UPPCO to restore power; however, records showed George Baird told UPPCO on October 13 the property was vacant. On October 21 Robin Baird told the utility she didn’t want electricity restored under the inn’s name.

Both Bairds were found in criminal contempt for ignoring the August 23 and October 11 orders. Robin was given 30 days in jail, while George must serve 21 days.

Additional court dates are scheduled for Robin Baird, who is also charged with felonious assault with a weapon.
