Keweenaw-area students discovered sexting

CALUMET, MI--    Police say no charges will be brought against Copper Country teens involved in a sexting scandal.

According to WLUC-TV, Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post say more than 200 photos of nude and semi-nude female students from Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, and Lake Linden-Hubbell schools were discovered on the file-sharing website Dropbox.  Some of the girls involved are as young as 14 years old.  Officials say more than 30 area girls were identified in the photos, and four male students are also involved.

Troopers discussed the case with the Houghton County Prosecutor.  Instead of charging the teens with possession and distribution of child pornography—punishable by up to four years in jail—officials decided to use the situation to educate the kids.  They stress nothing posted on the internet is ever private, and parents need to talk to their children about what they’re doing online.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
