New charges from Saatio's Northwestern Florida escape

MILTON, FL--   The charges keep piling up as John Saatio keeps trying to avoid transport back to Houghton.

WLUC-TV says Saturday around 11 p.m. the 35-year-old escaped a prison transport van that had stopped at a Santa Rosa County, Florida rest area.  He had undone his handcuffs and belly chain with a makeshift handcuff key. He was recaptured near a wooded area around 11 p.m. Sunday.

Saatio is now charged with third-degree obstructing police and second-degree possession of a concealed handcuff key while in custody.  He remains lodged under close watch at the Santa Rosa County Jail.

Saatio initially fled authorities in June of 2015 following a hearing at the Houghton County Courthouse.  He was seen in the Green Bay area, then captured in Costa Rica nearly a year later.  Saatio had applied for refugee status and had spent three weeks in a detention center when he escaped through a ventilation duct.  Authorities caught him 48 hours later and deported him to the Harris County Jail in Texas.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
