New phone scam affects Cloverland Electric

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Another U.P. utility is coping with a phone scam.

Cloverland Electric officials say someone is calling customers and telling them to pay their bill with a pre-paid credit card, or the power will be turned off within 30 minutes.

Cloverland Director of Communications Todd Chapman says utilities in Michigan and Wisconsin are seeing an increase in fraudulent phone calls.

He notes Cloverland does not call members concerning payment before disconnection.  If a call is received, hang up and contact Cloverland immediately at 906-562-4953.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
