Rock woman charged in 'puppy mill' case

ESCANABA, MI--   A Delta County woman has been arraigned for running an alleged puppy mill in Maple Ridge Township.

Rebecca Johnson of Rock is charged with felony abandonment/animal cruelty, 25 or more animals and misdemeanor running an unregistered animal shelter. The first charge is punishable by up to seven years in prison. She faces up to 90 days in jail for the second charge.

Michigan State Police discovered 134 dogs, seven horses and 11 miniature horses on the property.
The Delta Animal Shelter has been caring for the dogs. Officials say 100 puppies have been born since the dogs have been at the shelter. A total of 23 horses have been lodged on a volunteer farm.

Johnson posted a $60,000 cash or surety bond on November 23. She’s not allowed to purchase, possess or care for animals.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for December 17. A preliminary exam is set for January 11.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
