MSP investigate homicide in Mackinac County

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI— A Mackinac County woman is in jail for murder.

Michigan State Police from the St. Ignace post were called to a residence just north of Hessel Thursday evening on a report of a disturbance involving a firearm. Troopers found a deceased 73-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound at the scene.

A short time later, 34-year-old Joelle Chamberlain was located just down the road from the residence. Troopers say they saw numerous indications she was involved in the homicide, and they took her into custody.

Chamberlain is a relative of the victim. Both are from the Hessel and Pickford areas.

Chamberlain was arraigned on a charge of open murder. She remains lodged in the Mackinac County Jail without bond.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

Troopers were assisted by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Tribal Police, Clark Township EMS, and the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab in Grayling.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
