Scammers pretending to be from Marquette County Sheriff's Office

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning residents about current scams making the rounds.

Deputies have received complaints that callers are spoofing the correct phone number and posing as Sheriff’s Office staff.

In one scam, the caller tells the victim their computer has been hacked and money needs to be sent to fix it. In another scam, someone poses as a now-retired sergeant and tells the victim there is a warrant for their arrest.

Officials say residents should always use extreme caution when paying someone over the phone, especially if they receive such a call.

Police say if you ever doubt the legitimacy of someone you are talking with, even if the caller ID is correct, look up the phone number independently and call that number to verify the personnel.
