Man threatens Marquette Police and others with gun

MARQUETTE, MI— A man is in custody after he allegedly pointed a gun at people at City Hall Monday.

Marquette City Police say around 3:35 p.m., the man entered the lower level of City Hall and asked to speak with an officer. Witnesses say while he waited, he allegedly pointed the gun at a county employee and a civilian. They were able to leave the building unharmed.

Police say the suspect then reapproached the front window and confronted officers with the gun. Officers negotiated with the man for about 90 minutes before they disarmed him. A loaded handgun was recovered.

The suspect and one officer received minor injuries. The suspect was taken to UPHS-Marquette for evaluation.

People in City Hall were evacuated or told to shelter in place during the incident. A perimeter was established containing the incident to the lower level of City Hall.

The incident remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Assisting with the incident were the Marquette County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, NMU Police Department, Marquette Fire Department, UPHS-Marquette EMS, and Marquette County Central Dispatch.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
