Downstate men charged in Isle Royale wildfire

GRAND RAPIDS, MI— Three Michigan men face federal charges for starting a wildfire on Isle Royale National Park.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten says the suspects are Dylan Wagner, 29, of Grand Rapids, Jason Allard, 28, of Macomb, and Scott Allard, 30, of Clinton Township. Each is charged with lighting, tending, or using a fire, causing damage to real property and violating conditions established by the superintendent at Isle Royale National Park.

The suspects are accused of illegally camping too close to the Mount Franklin and Tobin Harbor trails in August of 2022. They allegedly built a fire that was not in a metal ring or grill provided by the park. The fire spread, burned park property, and created a public safety hazard.

Both charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 6 months’ imprisonment, up to a $5,000 fine, up to 5 years’ probation, and mandatory restitution.
