New phone scam hitting Chippewa County

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office has been dealing with yet another type of phone scam.

The department has received reports that someone is calling residents and telling them they missed federal jury duty. The caller says there’s a warrant out for the person’s arrest.

The victim is told they must pay a cash bond, either through their debit card or a gift card from such stores as Walmart or Meijer. Once the victim gives the code off the gift cards, the money has been spent.

The scammer then tells the victim to go to their local sheriff’s office for a receipt.

Police say if you are ever asked to buy gift cards to pay for something, it’s a scam. Hang up immediately and report the call to your local law enforcement.
