Tech Clean Snowmobile Challenge ends

HOUGHTON, MI (AP)--   A yearly competition to design environmentally friendly snowmobiles finished up 

Saturday at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. 

The week-long Clean Snowmobile Challenge brings together college students from engineering, business and marketing disciplines. They produce technical papers describing ideas for making snowmobiles that emit less pollution and run more quietly.

Students compete in three categories: internal combustion engines; diesel utility engines; and electric engines. Emissions tests are based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

A record 11 teams participated in one of the challenge's events a nearly 100-mile trek from the Keweenaw Research Center's test courses to downtown Copper Harbor.

Among the competitors were students from Lapland University in Finland.
