Students compete in three categories: internal combustion engines; diesel utility engines; and electric engines. Emissions tests are based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.
A record 11 teams participated in one of the challenge's events a nearly 100-mile trek from the Keweenaw Research Center's test courses to downtown Copper Harbor.
Among the competitors were students from Lapland University in Finland.
