MARQUETTE, MI-- Northern Michigan University students crushed a previous Guinness World Record by playing the largest-ever game of freeze tag at the Superior Dome Tuesday morning.
The effort was broadcast live by the Today show’s Al Roker as part of his five-day Rokerthon 3.
Roker and a Guinness World Record adjudicator presented Northern President Fritz Erickson with a certificate after 634 students played tag for 15 consecutive minutes. The effort easily beat the previous record of 438.
The Today show also featured footage of Roker’s Monday visit to several sites on campus.
Two lucky NMU students also won $5,000 scholarships during the event. Megan Crane received a Rokerthon scholarship through a random drawing at the end of the broadcast, while Valerie Urban was surprised when President Erickson announced she would receive a matching award.
