MARQUETTE, MI-- Students and staff at Graveraet Elementary School were evacuated during the school lunch period Monday after the cafeteria supervisor smelled smoke.
The principal and building custodian were alerted. They made the decision to evacuate the building until the source of the smell could be identified.
The Marquette City Fire Department responded to the school. With the assistance of district maintenance firefighters determined the cause to be a bad belt on a rooftop heating unit.
Officials gave the “all clear” and students were allowed back into the building.
MAPS Superintendent William Saunders says the Graveraet team of staff, faculty and students executed the mid-day real-life fire evacuation with precision and poise.
