Gwinn Schools, others, closed due to threat

Nicole Walton

GWINN, MI— All schools in the Gwinn Area Community Schools district are closed Friday, December 17, because of a threat.

Officials say they're canceling classes out of an overabundance of caution while they investigate the threat.

An anonymous threat made on video-sharing app TikTok reportedly calls on students to commit acts of violence on December 17. The so-called "challenge" is called "National Shoot Up Your School Day." It's not known where the threat originated, but hundreds of other TikTok posts reference the challenge.

Other U.P. schools that were also closed include Bark river Harris, Carney-Nadeau, Escanaba, Gladstone, Hannahville, Mid Peninsula, North Central, Rapid River, Sault Ste. Marie and Watersmeet.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
