MAPS district selects permanent superintendent

Interim Superintendent for Marquette Public Schools Zach Sedgwick has accepted the post on a permanent basis, district officials have announced.

Sedgwick released the following letter to MAPS students, families and staff:

"I am both humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve our Marquette community as your new superintendent, and I am grateful to our Board of Education for entrusting me with helping to chart the future course for MAPS; one full of hope, progress and success.

"This letter, much like our District’s energy, must focus on the future. We’re already well into planning our path moving forward through the lens of short and long-term goals, all focused on student achievement. The impact of COVID-19 on the academic, social and emotional learning of our students is real, and also closely aligned with a plan I feel is perfect for this moment in time – namely, MAPS goal of implementing a more robust Multi-Tiered-System of Support (MTSS). This effort closely parallels the intent of our newest cycle of Strategic Planning, set to begin this spring and continue through 2025. MTSS and Strategic Planning will be the mechanisms I hope to use in establishing a shared vision and a common goal in the next three to five years.

"I want to take a moment to thank my colleagues for their continued excellence, and most recently their enormous sacrifice in keeping our buildings open. My deepest gratitude extends to those who work in front of and behind the scenes, daily giving their all for this phenomenal institution; our central office and administrative team, faculty and staff. Thank you all for your dedication and hard work. Our students shine with a light reflecting your hard work. What we’ve accomplished amidst these recent challenges is unprecedented. For this I am truly grateful.

"I would be remiss to neglect the opportunity to thank those who’ve gone before me. My predecessors were faithful stewards of their great responsibilities and did a masterful job positioning MAPS for success; no easy task in light of all we’ve faced.

"In May we will ask our community to renew a sinking fund which will help us focus our resources on creative programming to address student achievement, rather than the regular maintenance required to keep up with our complex infrastructure. Thank you for considering this important step in maintaining the long-standing partnership between our schools and the Marquette community.

"During the past fourteen years at MAPS, I have served at Marquette Senior High School, Bothwell Middle School, Superior Hills Elementary School and now as your superintendent. These varied roles have afforded me the opportunity to build relationships with a wide range of amazing individuals throughout our district and community. I continue to be amazed as I’ve observed the talents of students, skills of staff, and the resolve of our families.

"Serving as the MAPS superintendent is truly an honor and it is with the utmost gratitude that I welcome you along for an exciting journey with a destination full of possibilities."
