Gwinn Schools select new superintendent

Nicole Walton

GWINN, MI— On September 25, 2023, the Gwinn Area Community Schools Board of Education selected Dr. Sara Croney as its new Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. Croney replaced former Superintendent Brandon Bruce, who accepted a position at a downstate school.

“The Board was extremely impressed with Dr. Croney’s interview,” Board President John Waldo said. “She had been serving as our interim so we got a chance to witness her work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to the district before hiring her. We are lucky to have her join our team.”

Dr. Croney comes to Gwinn after a long career in education, most recently having been the Superintendent and Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the Maple/Northwestern School District in Maple, Wisconsin. Dr. Croney and her husband, Doug, moved to Gwinn in June to be close to two of their sons and families.

“The quality of educators and staff at Gwinn makes me wish our five children had the privilege of going to school here,” stated Dr. Croney.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
