MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
The state of Michigan signed Northern State Normal School—a college for teachers—into existence on April 28th, 1899 and the first day of classes was held on September 19th of that year. In 1963, the state designated Northern as a university and gave the school its current name.
NMU will spend the next year highlighting and celebrating the university’s history. Activities include the announcement of Northern’s Alma Mater on May 3rd. The song will formally debut at the Homecoming football game in September. And a free outdoor concert featuring a chart-topping musical act will be held during Homecoming. Officials have not yet divulged who the act will be.
