LANSING, M (AP)— Michigan's Great Start Collaboratives, which connect families with child development resources and child-care information, face closures and reduced services due to state budget cuts.
The $24.12 billion education budget omitted $19.4 million for the programs. This has left many communities scrambling to maintain services.
As of Monday, 54 collaboratives were listed on the state’s website, but it's unclear how many have closed. Some are relying on private donations or general funds to stay open. Leaders worry that without these programs, children may be less prepared for school.
Political leaders are divided on restoring the funding.
