LANSING, MI-- The Republican-controlled Michigan House has passed several measures aimed at tightening state election laws. Backers say they'd protect against voter fraud, while critics say they'd create obstacles to voting.
Michigan's Republican Secretary of State backs the proposals approved Tuesday. They now go to the GOP-led Senate, where they'll be considered with other proposals.
The eight-bill package includes requiring voters to present photo identification when applying for an absentee ballot in their first election or sign an affidavit. Third-party voter registration groups would also have to register and receive training.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says election legislation is pending in 32 states this year, including ten with proposals to strengthen existing voter ID laws. The efforts have been largely pushed by Republicans and opposed by Democrats.
