PARADISE, MI – Tahquamenon Falls State Park reopened Wednesday, nearly a week after a wildfire in Luce County forced its closure.

Officials say the Upper Falls Viewing Area, Lower Falls Campground, and Visitor Center will open to the public. The hiking trails north of M-123—including the North Country Trail—will remain closed.

Rain fell Tuesday on the 21,450-acre blaze, which is about 55 percent contained. One hundred-fifteen structures have been destroyed, including 41 homes and cabins, one store, and one motel.

The DNR says a temporary flight restriction remains in effect over the area of the fire. The restriction was put in place Saturday to provide a safe environment for firefighting aircraft operations, and will remain in effect until further notice.

All road closures and evacuation orders will also remain in effect until further notice.
