MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI-- The National Weather Service has confirmed that a rare tornado touched down last week in the Upper Peninsula.
Officials say the weak twister touched down Friday in Northwestern Marquette County. No injuries were reported.
The Weather Service estimates the tornado traveled as far as eight miles and was as wide as 200 feet, with wind speeds of up to 95 miles per hour.
The determination came after the Weather Service surveyed the area for damage, which mostly was to trees and included the Kennecott Eagle Mine site.
Weather officials say the Upper Peninsula typically gets about one tornado a year.
