If you've stepped outside in the Marquette area in the past hour, you've probably noticed it's hazy with a strong scent of smoke in the air. According to the National Weather Service, the source of the smoke is forest fires in Canada crossing Lake Superior, and it's expected to continue affecting the Upper Peninsula this afternoon.
Per the NWS special weather statement:
A layer of smoke aloft from forest fires in Ontario will continue to move across Lake Superior and through most of Western and Central Upper Michigan this afternoon. This layer of smoke could reduce visibility at times and could cause some problems for people with respiratory problems. If the smoke smell is particularly strong, stay indoors and close windows.
UPDATE: The NWS updated their special weather statement at 5:51 p.m. and said shifting winds tonight should clear the smoke away from the U.P.
