Marquette's South Beach closed briefly due to high levels of bacteria

MARQUETTE, MI--   South Beach in Marquette reopened to residents late Friday, after a high reading of E. coli bacteria forced its closure.

The city’s Water and Wastewater Department took one of two weekly water samples Friday afternoon and found bacterial levels higher than 300 milligrams per liter, which is considered unsafe for swimming.  Officials closed the beach according to protocol.

A test taken later the same day indicated E. coli levels were safe at under 300 milligrams per liter, so the beach reopened.

City officials say they’ll work with the Superior Watershed Partnership to monitor the beach daily for the next week.
