Another Marquette beach closes due to E. coli

MARQUETTE, MI--   For the second time in eight days a Marquette beach was closed over the weekend because of high levels of E. coli bacteria.

City officials closed North Beach between Fair Avenue and Hawley Street Saturday after a water sample showed 400 milligrams of bacteria per liter.  A count of more than 300 is considered unsafe.

The beach reopened Saturday night.

On July 20 Marquette’s South Beach was closed for most of the day because of high E. coli levels.  Officials say they will continue to monitor the beaches for higher-than-normal bacterial readings.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
