MARQUETTE, MI-- Rio Tinto has released its Eagle Mine Community Scorecard for the fourth quarter of 2012.
Information from company updates at local forums, scores provided by the community on how Rio Tinto is doing in five categories, and the company’s responses to how the public thinks it can improve are combined in the scorecard, which is issued every six months.
Scores indicate 46 percent of 293 people who responded think Rio Tinto’s environmental performance meets expectations, while 37 percent say it exceeds expectations. Forty-seven percent say the company meets expectations in hiring local people and staying safe, and 45 percent think Rio Tinto meets expectations in transparency and communications.
But in the “Leave More Wood on the Woodpile” category—which means leaving the area better than before the mine was built—29 percent say they need more information. Thirty-four percent say their expectations are met.
The company’s performance fell below expectations between 7 to 15 percent across the categories.
