MELLEN, WI (AP)-- A mining company has reduced the number of test holes it plans to make for a proposed iron ore mine near Lake Superior.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says Gogebic Taconite withdrew its earlier exploration license application and submitted a replacement application Thursday.
DNR Waste and Materials Management Program Director Ann Coakley says Gogebic is now proposing to drill eight exploration borings instead of the 13 the company originally proposed.
Company officials say they removed five of the original test holes so they could gather more information to address stormwater issues. That need was identified when DNR staff inspected the proposed drilling locations and access roads Tuesday.
The department will review the new application. Gogebic may reapply for a license for additional exploration borings in the future.
