HOUGHTON, MI (AP)-- Two veteran scientists have joined the faculty of Michigan Technological University's Great Lakes Research Center, which was established a year ago in Houghton.
Gary Fahnenstiel and David Schwab are helping the center develop its research programs. Both previously worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor.
Fahnenstiel is the former head of NOAA's Lake Michigan Field Station. He's a specialist in the interaction between microscopic aquatic plants and their environment.
Schwab created the Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System, the tool that the National Weather Service uses throughout the Great Lakes basin to forecast wind, waves, circulation, temperature and water levels.
About 25 researchers are associated with the new center.
