$1 million slated for cleanup of Manistique River

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is getting a million dollars in federal funds to clean up the Manistique River.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration money will be used to develop measures to remove PCB contamination from river sediment.

The river was listed as an “Area of Concern” in 1987 due to contamination from PCBs, oils, and sewer overflows.  Debris and sawdust from more than a century of logging and milling in the area also degraded the watershed.

The funding is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a competitive grant program coordinated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
