MANISTIQUE, MI-- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is getting more than $2.1 million to continue cleanup of the Manistique River.
The funding comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and will be used to clean up contaminated sediment and industrial waste from the water.
The Manistique River has been listed as an Area of Concern since 1987 due to repeated contamination from PCBs, oils, and sewer overflows. Debris and sawdust from more than a century of logging and milling in the area have also degraded the watershed.
Officials say successful remediation will mean the removal of dredging restrictions, and fish PCB concentrations will return to safe levels.
