Group says underwater pipelines unnecessary for oil supply

LANSING, MI (AP)--   An environmental group says shutting down twin oil pipelines known as Line 5 beneath the Straits of Mackinac would not disrupt supplies of crude oil or propane in the Midwest.

In a report Monday, the group For Love of Water says other pipelines have capacity and flexibility to meet energy demand in the Great Lakes region without the Mackinac segment of Line 5, operated by the Canadian company Enbridge.

The report says at least 90 percent of Line 5's oil goes to Canadian refineries, so it's not essential for the Marathon refinery in Detroit.

Environmentalists say a rupture in the straits area would do catastrophic damage. Enbridge says the 62-year-old pipeline is safe.

The company declined comment on the report ahead of a Monday meeting in Lansing of a Michigan pipeline task force.
