Officials: Michigan in good shape on carbon emission cuts

thecarbonaccount.com

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)--   Officials say Michigan is on track to meet federal requirements for reducing carbon emissions from electric power plants.

Valerie Brader of the Michigan Agency for Energy says the state could stay on its present course for the next 10 years without falling out of compliance with a timeline set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. But further steps eventually must be taken.

The Obama administration's Clean Power Plan seeks a 32 percent nationwide reduction in carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. Each state has its own target and must craft a plan for meeting it. Michigan's required cut is 31 percent.

Dan Wyant of the Department of Environmental Quality says Michigan will submit a draft plan by September 2016 but completing a final version will require two extra years.
