UPPCO planning water drawdown at reservoirs

MARQUETTE, MI--   Upper Peninsula Power Company is lowering water levels at its hydroelectric reservoirs to prepare for the coming spring runoff.

Drawdowns of levels at the Victoria and Bond Falls reservoirs start this month; the Prickett Hydro Dam drawdown is slated to start in February; and UPPCO’s Lake Gogebic reservoir level will be lowered between now and the end of February.

Officials are warning residents that lower water levels may cause “bridging”.  That’s where lower water levels leave a space under ice.  Increased water flows from rivers can also erode the underside of the ice, making it unsafe.

Officials urge residents to be extremely careful around all reservoirs, lakes, and associated rivers this time of year.
