Manistique River receives millions in cleanup funding

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is awarding the Michigan Department of Natural Resources money to continue cleaning up the Manistique River.

More than $3.7 million will be used to clean sediment contaminated by industrial waste in the river.  It will also help the DEQ develop and implement measures to remediate PCB pollution in the watershed.

The Manistique River has been listed as an Area of Concern since 1987 due to a long history of industrialization and contamination by PCBs, oils, and sewer overflows.  Debris and sawdust from more than a century of logging and milling also contributed to the river’s degradation
