ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK (AP)-- A project has kicked off to bring materials for building boardwalks and bridges to Isle Royale National Park.
MLive.com reports that boats, a helicopter and a multi-state work crew are working to bring 64 tons of bridging planks and logs so they can be installed in remote areas of the island national park as part of a project called "Heavy Lift."
The boardwalks and bridges will be installed over the next few years to replace aging wooden structures. The new walkways will allow hikers to cross swamps and bogs while protecting plant life.
Crew members working on the project hail from multiple states, including Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Officials expect work to be completed by the fall of 2018.
