NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI-- Several state environmental groups are hosting a “Landing Blitz” in Negaunee Township this week to educate the public about invasive species.
The Michigan Departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Rural Development, along with the Central Upper Peninsula Cooperative Weed Management Area and Upper Peninsula Power Company are hosting the event Friday at the east end boat launch on the Dead River Basin.
Officials will provide educational materials, answer questions, and discuss what boaters and residents can do to prevent the spread of invasive plants and animals like the Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussel. They say aquatic invasives crowd out native species, disrupt lake ecosystems, and interfere with boating, fishing, and other recreation.
Part of Michigan’s annual Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week, the “Landing Blitz” will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hoist Basin.
