CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI (AP)-- The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy has purchased 13 acres of diverse riverfront habitat on the Chocolay Bayou that will become a nature preserve.
The site of what will be known as the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve is located between Marquette and Harvey near the north mouth of the Chocolay River.
Several local businesses, organizations and individuals have been working for the past two years to raise more than $175,000 to buy the property from private landowners and maintain the land.
The conservancy plans to protect the area for the public's use. Plans call for a small parking lot in the area as well as two small foot trails.
A carry-in canoe launch is also planned to non-motorized paddlers to access the water.
