GLADSTONE, MI-- The U.S. Forest Service and Michigan Department of Natural Resources are joining forces for several so-called “Good Neighbor Authority” projects.
The agencies are signing three Supplemental Project Agreements for timber sale work on the Hiawatha, Huron-Manistee, and Ottawa National Forests. The Authority lets the parties work across jurisdictional boundaries to manage forests by allowing the state to do work planned for national forest system lands. Officials say the work creates healthy forest conditions while supplying wood fiber to Michigan’s forest products industry.
A portion of the receipts from timber sales will go to reimburse the state for its work. The remaining funds will be used for additional forest restoration activities.
On-the-ground work is expected to happen this year and next.
