Conservancy dedicates 13 acres of land by Chocolay Bayou

uplandconservancy.com

HARVEY, MI (AP)--   The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy has dedicated its new, nearly 13-acre nature preserve on the Chocolay Bayou.

Despite the rain, most activities were held as planned Saturday as part of the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve dedication. A flotilla on the bayou was rained out.

Several local businesses, organizations and individuals worked for the past two years to raise money to buy the property from private landowners and maintain the land. About $158,000 was raised, which surpassed the purchase price and puts the conservancy a few thousand dollars toward a stewardship goal of about $20,000.

Adding a parking lot and boardwalk are among the plans.

The preserve is located between Marquette and Harvey near the north mouth of the Chocolay River.
