Burns planned for Hiawatha National Forest land

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, MI--   The Hiawatha National Forest is notifying local residents about possible prescribed burns in certain areas.

Officials say forecasts indicate favorable burning conditions may occur this month and next.

The Upper Peninsula Central Zone is preparing for the 8-Mile prescribed burn.  It’s about 15 miles south of Shingleton, two miles south of M-94 and Forest Road 2212.

During active burning in the 8-Mile area smoke may be visible from M-94, County Road 437, and other points throughout Schoolcraft County.

Officials say prescribed fires improve the health of vegetation and wildlife habitat in the National Forest.  Openings also serve as natural firebreaks by keeping large amounts of hazardous fuels away from private homes and property boundaries.

If weather conditions are not right, the fires will be postponed until more favorable conditions arise.
