Marquette County welcomes flood aid

MDOT

MARQUETTE, MI--   Repairs continue to be made to roads in flood-stricken areas of Marquette County, and officials are hoping state and federal help will speed the process.

Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster for the county on Friday, after a rain-swollen Chocolay River flooded homes, submerged roadways, and washed out a bridge on M-94.

The declaration makes available state resources and authorizes the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division to coordinate state efforts.  It also allows the state to request emergency federal highway funding to repair roadways in Chocolay, Skandia, and West Branch Townships.

Marquette County officials declared a “local state of emergency” on Friday, which activated local response and recovery plans.  The county determined local resources are insufficient to address the situation.
