Quiet recreation improvements planned at Tahquamenon Falls

PARADISE, MI (AP)--   Officials say Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula will provide improvements to boost quiet recreation this winter.

Among changes at the Lower Falls section of the park will be an enlarged plowed parking area, trailhead and 4 miles of marked snowshoe trails.

Park manager Craig Krepps says more people are showing interest in snowshoeing, hiking, photography and winter camping. He says the Lower Falls is ideally suited for those pursuits.

The Tahquamenon River cascades over a staircase of five waterfalls in the Lower Falls. A 50-foot-high waterfall is farther upstream.

Krepps says snowshoers should wear foot gear to improve traction because portions of the trail include steep hills.

Dog sled rides will be offered on weekends as snow depth permits.
