Drilling starts again in Porkies

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI--   Highland Copper has resumed drilling at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

The Department of Natural Resources granted Orvana Resources—a subsidiary of Highland Copper—a permit to drill 12.5-inch-diameter core borings to evaluate copper minerals under the surface.

Work was halted in late February because of unseasonably warm weather. Orvana’s permit stipulates that drilling take place only on frozen ground, preferably when there’s more than a foot of snow cover.  Officials determined conditions had improved to the point where drilling could continue and mobilized a rig Tuesday. They anticipated being ready to begin boring another hole by Wednesday night.

Work is expected to be completed by April 30, depending on spring road weight restrictions.
