ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI-- Michigan Department of Natural Resources sawyers are headed to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park to help clean up significant tree fall from a late-season ice and snow storm.
Last week higher elevations at the park received an inch of ice, followed by 2 to 4 inches of snow. Numerous trees were weakened and toppled by the weight.
With 40 to 50 miles of the park’s roughly 90 miles of hiking trails assessed so far, 17 miles are reported to be in “extraordinarily: bad condition or impassible. About 26 miles of ski and mountain bike trails have yet to be assessed.
Officials say in some areas as many as 100 trees per mile were reported downed along trails, and 25 to 33 percent of trail markers are damaged or destroyed.
