GLADSTONE, MI-- The Hiawatha National Forest is planning prescribed burning activities in the near future.
In the forest’s West Zone, personnel are preparing to conduct the 8 Mile burn about 15 miles south of Shingleton, two miles south of M-94 on Forest Road 2212.
In the East Zone personnel are preparing a prescribed burn southwest of Brimley.
Officials say smoke may be visible from roads and other points in Schoolcraft and Chippewa counties.
Current forecasts suggest suitable burning weather may occur over the next several weeks.
Prescribed burns improve the overall health of vegetation and wildlife habitat, provide fire breaks, and reduce fire intensity near communities.
