SWP gets grants to protect Lake Superior properties

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy has received funding to protect two threatened coastal properties.

The $800,000 grants are part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. It’s a cooperative effort between federal, tribal, state, and local partners to protect coastal wetland and forest habitats through the establishment of community forests.

Earlier this year the SWP received $400,000 for the Eagles Nest property, seven miles west of Marquette. It includes a variety of forest types and coastal wetlands, including 1,130 feet of Lake Superior sand shoreline.

And the SWP was recently awarded another $400,000 to acquire coastal property in Alger County, including the mouth of the Laughing Whitefish River. About 20 miles west of Munising, the property includes about 1,200 feet of the river and more than 2,000 feet of Lake Superior sand beach.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
