DNR hatcheries, lakes surveying to benefit under new state budget

LANSING, MI— The recently approved state budget includes money for fish hatcheries and a new survey vessel.

The Department of Natural Resources says $30 million is slated for hatchery infrastructure improvements and $4 million will be used to replace an outdated Great Lakes Survey ship.

There are six hatcheries around the state that produce fish for stocking lakes and streams. The newest facility is 20 years old, while the others range from 40 to over 50 years old.

The DNR survey vessel Steelhead has been operating for 54 years. The data it collects assists in making management decisions, provides assessment for Tribal Consent Decree management, and supports aquatic invasive species surveillance.
