More than 1,000 acres along Sturgeon River to be preserved in Baraga County

BARAGA COUNTY, MI— Baraga County is getting $2.7 million from the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund to buy 1,184 acres along the Sturgeon River in Covington Township.

The Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy will assist the county with management, monitoring, maintenance, and trail development.

Officials are planning to create several miles of hiking trails, kayak launches, and environmental education kiosks. They say the acquisition will reduce habitat fragmentation by expanding and protecting wildlife corridors from development, including critical habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
