KEWEENAW PENINSULA, MI— The Nature Conservancy is set to secure more than 31,000 acres of land in the Keweenaw.
TNC has already bought 22,700 acres from the Rohatyn Group and has entered into a purchase agreement for 8,900 acres more. The second agreement is expected to close by the end of this year.
Officials say the land—which will be sustainably managed and protected—will remain open to the public.
TNC says the Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the most unfragmented, climate resilient forested and freshwater areas of the central United States. It is an area recognized by The Nature Conservancy as a global priority for both biodiversity and climate resiliency, and an opportunity to protect an extraordinary region for both nature and people.
