EGLE grant to help remove PFAS from Sawyer

SAWYER, MI— A state program will help cleanup efforts at the former KI Sawyer Air Force Base.

The Michigan Clean Water Plan grant comes through the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s Substantial Public Health Risk Project Program.

Marquette County is getting more than $1.2 million to purchase equipment to treat biosolids contaminated with PFAS on former Air Force property. The work will help officials transition from storing the biosolids on site to consolidating the material and taking it to a landfill for disposal.

PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or in the human body.
