KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI— Five miles of Lake Superior shoreline in Keweenaw County are protected, following the purchase of land by The Nature Conservancy.

The 24-acre parcel will connect the east and west sides of the Mary Macdonald Preserve at Horseshoe Harbor. The acreage runs north to south from the shoreline into the forest. It creates five miles of contiguously connected and protected shoreline, making it the second largest protected tract of shoreline in Keweenaw County.

The preserve was established in 1982 and now covers 1,224 acres.

The TNC purchased the land from a private owner for an undisclosed sum.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
